The King of Pop returned from the dead on Halloween Weekend to take the top spot at the box office. Queue up Thriller or what have you because he’s going to be dug up many more times I assume. The film, This is It is being heralded by most critics despite just being a piece to collect on the cash cow that was Michael Jackson. If it wins any awards this year I’m going to dropkick a TV and I will not disappoint either. Below are the top 10 for the weekend with a little bit of notes to go along.
1. This is It – $21.3M ($32.509M)
2. Paranormal Activity – $16.54M ($84.78M)
3. Law Abiding Citizen – $7.303M ($51.385M)
4. Couples Retreat – $6.097M ($86.663M)
5. Saw 6 – $5.56M ($22.824M)
6. Where the Wild Things Are – $5.081M ($61.8M)
7. The Stepfather – $3.4M ($24.748M)
8. Astro Boy – $3.035M ($10.891M)
9. Amelia – $3M ($8.306M)
10. Cirque du Freak: Vampire’s Assistant – $2.809M ($10.521M)
Notes
- Obviously if you haven’t heard of Paranormal Activity yet you will now. It has become the most profitable of all the times beating out The Blair With Project. And guess what, it had the same marketing strategy essentially. Low budget, shock value and word of mouth. People say it’s shit, people say it’s awesome. Sounds exactly the same as Blair Witch. Oh well. Moving on.
- In a surprising event, Where the Wild Things Are is falling off the radar while Law Abiding Citizen is riding off the coattails of Gerard Butler and Jamie Foxx. WTWTA has dropped 63.8% this week despite being a nerd/indie wet dream. It’s funny to think a remake of The Stepfather might be more profitable than it.
- Speaking of wet dreams, the wet dream for douchebags Boondock Saints 2 opened up this week on 68 screens. It made about $462k. Eh, it’d be better to watch an Arnie movie. At least then you’d get funny puns and jokes.
- Gentlemen Broncos opened up on 2 screens making $10k total. This comes from the guy who made Napoleon Dynamite and it looks interesting as it has Sam Rockwell and one half of Flight of the Conchords. I’ll wait for Netflix.
- For 2009 we have 21 $100M+ movies whereas in 2008 at this point we had 19. But 2008 had more $200M+ with 6 to 5. New Moon should fix that I would suspect.
Next Week
- A four film race is set as we have The Box from Richard Kelly, A Christmas Carol IN LIVE CAPTURE AND 3D, The Fourth Kind which has to be based on a true story for realz dog and Men Who Stare at Goats which just looks amazing.
